Overview:
Joint Base Balad is home to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing -- the most forward deployed Air Force wing in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The wing includes the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle and a contingent of HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters that provides combat search and rescue capability for the entire Iraqi theater. The base is also host to a C-130 Hercules squadron that provides intra and inter-theater airlift, delivering passengers and cargo to bases around the country. On a monthly basis, Joint Base Balad logistics readiness experts process more than 950 cargo aircraft, 12,000 tons of cargo and 19,000 passengers, making it the busiest aerial port operation and busiest single runway operation in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility and the Department of Defense.
Scope of Services:
Sallyport as the Prime Contractor provided all personnel, equipment, tools, materials, supervision, and logistics support for airfield sweeper operations and management of airfield sweeper services at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. Airfield sweeper services include foreign object debris (FOD), removal & prevention, dust abatement and mud removal. All work performed is in accordance with applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards as well as Air Force, Army and Department of Defense(DoD) Regulations and United Facilities Criteria (UFC).
- Removed FOD and conducted sweeping operations at airfield which included entry control points, taxiways, ramps, aircraft maintenance pits, aircraft run-up pits, aircraft fuel stands and parking stands, airfield fingers and throats, paved parking lanes, emergency access roads, primary roads that lead to and from aircraft movement areas, runways, and other designated areas and roadways within the airfield restricted area
- Utilizing Tymco High Speed Vacuum Sweepers, performed services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in accordance with all applicable Air Force regulations (IAW) and USCENTCOM Regulation 415-1, Contingency and Long Term Base Camp Facilities Standards
- Responded immediately to urgent/emergency calls by Balad Tower and actively patrolled and monitored all airfield surfaces for FOD
- Performed preventive maintenance on all airfield sweeper equipment according to appropriate schedule, standard operating procedures (SOP), technical manuals and maintained a record of equipment maintenance
- Established collection points and clean out sites in a manner to prevent FOD or windblown debris hazards to reenter the airfield
- Ordered all spare parts and supplies to meet sweeper vehicle preventative maintenance requirements using the government owned logistics and supply systems
