Overview:
Contingency Operations Base (COB) Basrah is located adjacent to the Basrah International Airport in Basrah Iraq. The base was opened in 2003 by the British to support British military operations in Basrah. The base is 1200 acres and consists of over 1000 numbered billets, offices, and bunkers. Sallyport is also responsible for all taxi-ways, ramps, hot refuel pads and 11000 foot of runway. Sallyport works hand in hand with our Iraqi counterparts to provide mutual aid for commercial aircraft standbys and emergencies. In 2009, the base was transferred over to the U.S. military and Sallyport under a DoD Prime Contract constructed and equipped a fire station and is providing Expeditionary Fire Fighting (EFF) services there.
Scope of Services:
Sallyport is responsible for providing everything to support fire fighting operations at COB Basra. The services include fire protection support, emergency response, fire vehicle and Critical Emergency Equipment (CEE) management, operational proficiency training, fire prevention education and fire prevention training IAW Army regulations and NFPA standards.
- Mobilized and took over operations from the British in 15 days
- Replaced all PPE with state of the art equipment
- Constructed a dedicated, centralized Structural Fire Station
- Renovated a degraded British RAF hanger into a fully functional Crash Station
- Provided the Basrah International Airport Iraqi fire department personnel with training and performed joint exercises with them
- Provided fire training to military and non-fire department personnel including Fire Warden training
- Provided Aircraft crash rescue emergencies and or standby during operations such as hot refueling operations, refueling of aircraft loaded with munitions, defueling operations and medical evacuations.
- Maintained firefighting equipment in a mission ready, clean and serviceable condition and Army regulations and NFPA standards.
- Provided normal and emergency maintenance and repairs of all equipment including that equipment used by the Basrah International Airport fire department
- Provided fire prevention services throughout the base camp, facilities and tents, in accordance with Army regulations and NFPA standards. These services include but are not limited to conducting semi-annual fire inspections and an exchange program for fire extinguishers.
- Developed internal fire department pre-incident fire plans and develop risk assessments throughout base camps, facilities and tents for assigned Area of Response (AOR).
- Established a servicing, re-charging and exchange program for dry chemical fire extinguishers, fire extinguisher holders and signage.
